What kind of Jewelry would Goddess Aphrodite wear? - Part 2
The Greek Goddess of love, beauty, and fertility keeps inspiring us still. For me her beauty and unique character as described in ageless stories provided me with many designs that featured her likeness in the form of an amazing engraved portrait.
A few weeks a go I have encountered a very interesting article. This article was neither about jewelry nor Greek mythology directly. It was about a technology company that wanted to express their political views in the most interesting manner.
The link the orginal article is here for you to click on if you would like to read the full-story. Below is my brief summary.
On April 12, 2017 the Phoenix based collective known as the Autonomous Space Agency Network (ASAN) launched a large helium-filled weather balloon with a total weight of about 1 lb. The name of the vessel was Aphrodite 1, named after the glamorous and lustful Greek Goddess of Love. Having seen this I decided to read the whole article with full attention.
Aphrodite 1 carried a payload of 1 GPS sensor, a small camera and a message for President Trump of the United States. The message was a printout of a tweet that read, "@realDonaldTrump: Look at that, you son of a bitch.”
Well as shocking as it may be for most people there is a story behind this message. This message is in fact a quote from the Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell, the sixth person to walk on the moon. He famously said of viewing Earth from space: “You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, 'Look at that, you son of a bitch.’ ” This quote has been cited as an example of the overview effect, a perspective shift toward global unity and conservation reported by astronauts struck by the planet's fragility.
Dr. Edgar Mitchell is by the way a very colorful person who regularly talked about conspiracy theories about extraterrestrial life and other times about remote healing and other unexplained phenomenon. Just google his name and find out more about him as you wish.
In the original article there is a more comprehensive coverage of the reasons behind this act. But in short ASAN wanted to generate awareness about budged cuts on issues regarding the global environment and space exploration. But they also wanted to celebrate the 56th anniversary of Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin achievement to become the first human in space.
There is no way to be certain but the name Aphrodite 1 was no coincidence if you ask me. Aphrodite is a passionate God who was bold and daring at the same time. She has been a guiding figure for women through the history and an inspiration of how beauty can influence others for the better or worse.
With that as the backdrop story of my blog, I think now we are all ready to move on to see one my recent handmade necklaces. This necklace features the Aphrodite engraving of the ancient city of Knydos that I discussed previously in my blog.
Inspired by an ancient Greek ring, which had an ivory carving as its setting, this Aphrodite Necklace is masterfully crafted to praise beauty, love and desire. The focal point of the necklace, which is the Aphrodite pendant, represents the classic beauty of strong women and is perfect for those with unique style looking to make a statement.
Here is the list of materials I have used: Sterling silver, Replica Brass Coin Hand Set in Sterling silver, Green Agate Beads, Unakite Beads, Sterling Silver Clasp
I hope you enjoyed this. Please stay tuned for another blog post on one of my handmade jewelry creations!
